New Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program Starts July 1, 2026
Beginning July 1, 2026, Medicare is launching a new program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. The program is designed to help eligible Medicare patients access certain GLP-1 weight-loss medications for $50 per month.
If you have been considering medically supervised weight loss, this new program may make qualifying treatment more accessible.
What Is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary federal program for eligible adults with Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage. It provides access to selected GLP-1 medications used for weight management at a fixed patient cost of $50 for a one-month supply.
The program is scheduled to operate from July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027.
Which GLP-1 Medications Are Covered?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge currently includes:
- Foundayo® tablets
- Wegovy® injections or tablets
- Zepbound® KwikPen®
Please note: Single-dose Zepbound® pens and Zepbound® vials are not covered through this program.
Who May Qualify?
Patients must meet all of the program’s general eligibility requirements.
- You must have Medicare Part D drug coverage through a standalone Medicare drug plan or a Medicare health plan that includes prescription drug coverage.
- You cannot be enrolled only in certain excluded Medicare plan types.
- You cannot already be receiving a GLP-1 medication paid for by your Medicare drug plan.
- You cannot have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease. Medicare notes that people with these conditions may already qualify for GLP-1 coverage through their existing drug plan.
- You must be at least 18 years old.
Your Medicare plan, pharmacy, and Medicare will determine whether you meet the program’s complete eligibility requirements.
Medicare GLP-1 Bridge BMI Requirements
In addition to the general requirements, patients must meet at least one of the following clinical criteria:
- A BMI of 35 or higher
- A BMI of 30 or higher with certain qualifying heart failure, hard-to-control high blood pressure, or stage 3a or higher chronic kidney disease
- A BMI of 27 or higher with prediabetes or a history of heart attack, stroke, or blocked arteries in the arms or legs
BMI, or Body Mass Index, is calculated using your height and weight. A healthcare provider can help you determine your current BMI and discuss how it relates to your overall health.
How Does the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Work?
- Talk with your healthcare provider. Your provider can discuss whether GLP-1 treatment may be medically appropriate for you.
- A prescription is sent to the pharmacy. If a covered medication is appropriate, your provider submits the prescription.
- The pharmacy checks your eligibility. The pharmacy may request the Medicare identification number printed on your Medicare card.
- Your provider submits the required authorization. After the pharmacy confirms that you may be eligible, your provider completes the Medicare approval form.
- Medicare reviews the request. You and your provider will be notified whether coverage is approved.
- You pick up your medication. Approved patients pay $50 for a one-month supply.
After the first prescription is approved, refills generally do not require a new authorization as long as you remain on the same covered medication. A new authorization may be required if you switch to a different GLP-1 medication.
Important Cost Information
The $50 monthly payment applies regardless of income level. However, Medicare advises that:
- The $50 payment does not count toward your Medicare drug plan deductible.
- The payment does not count toward your annual out-of-pocket limit.
- Medications received through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge are not eligible for the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan.
- Only 28-day or 30-day prescriptions are covered.
